Etiquettes of speaking

It isn’t enough for one to look handsome and dashing in a public gathering. Rather, you need to have the confidence of a presidential candidate and be able to answer questions and entertain others with relative ease. People admire gentleman who have a captivating personality, one who can light the room just by their presence.

Such an individual has a reputation for speaking effectively and observing the etiquettes of a civilized and cultured man.

Tone of voice

First and foremost, it is important that you are neither too loud to disturb others nor too quiet so others can’t hear you. Most people’s voices tend to fall at these extremes, which can make it very discomforting others to speak with you for too long. Also, you should also aim to speak slower than your usual pace.

Talking too fast could give you the impression that you are feeling nervous and uncomfortable, especially if you are meeting people for the very first time. Speaking slowly is also a good strategy if you indeed are feeling nervous in situations such as in a job interview. It will help you gather your words a lot more easily, allowing you to speak without stuttering.

Use of words

You should also be someone who uses kind and appropriate words to reflect your gentle nature. Expletives and slang words, such as ‘gonna’, ‘yo’, ‘c’mon’, ‘man’, and others will give others a perception of an uncivilized man. You may be forgiven if you do so around your friends and close buddies, but if you are in a public place, such as a in a wedding or at work, it can be disastrous for your reputation.

Do not criticize

No one likes being criticized for their mistakes or points of view that are different to yours, especially if it is done so in a harsh manner. Never say words, such as ‘you are wrong’ or ‘you are mistaken’. Instead, use words, such as ‘in my humble opinion, ‘with respect your argument’, and then begin your explanation. In this way, the other person will feel valued for the concepts and thoughts he or she carries, and will be more receptive to what you have to say. It will also demonstrate your speaking ethics and manners of civility that will be resourceful in forming close relationships with others.

So the next time you have a debate on sensitive matters, such as the rights of black Americans in United States, make sure you argue in civil and ethical ways.

Talk about others’ interests

It is safe to assume that people are self-centered individuals, in that they do not take interest in anything that does not concern them. You might have noticed this when walking into a public gathering of people you do not know and find no person approaching you for a conversation. This is why it is best to throw away your selfishness and focus exclusively on the other person in order to attract attention.

Find what gets other people excited, their hobbies, the sports they like to play, and what types of movies they enjoy watching most.
